The Commandments in the New Testament

 

Did Jesus abolish the Ten Commandment Law when he came to earth?

Matt 5:17-20 Here Jesus states that the Ten Commandments will never pass away.

Matt 19:17; Mark 10:19; 12:29-30; Luke 18:20 When questioned about the law, Jesus never hinted that it would be destroyed or made unnecessary.

Luke 16:16-17 Before John the Baptist, the people heard nothing but the law; Now, we have the gospel of Christ. But the law is still in effect; it can never pass away.

 

What, then, was Jesus against?

Mark 7:7-13 These are the commandments Jesus is against. Jesus always honored the ten commandments, but he had no respect for these "commandments of men".

 

Did Jesus nullify the Old Testament when he came during the New Testament?

Luke 16:31; John 5:39, 10:34-36 Jesus always gave respect for the Old Testament. He said it was the best evidence that He was the Messiah.

John 7:49 Jesus said the that Pharasies were cursed because they didn't know the law (the Old Testament).

 

IF Jesus never abolished the law or the Old Testament, how should His disciples relate to the Commandments?

John 14:15,21; 15:10 Jesus disciples were to show their love for Him by keeping His commandments.

John 1:17 Jesus came, not to abolish the law, but the bring grace and truth.

 

Did the apostles believe the Old Testament and keep the Commandments?

Acts 24:14 Paul believed the Old Testament.

Acts 28:23 The Law of Moses is one of the best ways of establishing faith in Jesus.

Rom 3:31; 5:13; 7:12,16 This lists only a few instances where Paul mentions the law in the book of Romans. In fact, much of the book is devoted to the subject of keeping the law.

2John 1:5-6 After Jesus lived on the earth, John admonished this believer to keep the commandments.

 

How does Jesus mission and sacrifice relate to our keeping the law?

Rom 8:3-4 This is the gospel. Jesus will enable us to keep the law! The law, by itself, is void of the power to make us obey it. By ourselves, we can't keep the law. Jesus life demostrates that it is possible to keep the law; His death frees us from our past guilt; and His continual presence with us by His Holy Spirit enables us keep the law in the moment of temptation!

 

What Old Testament laws were abolished at the cross?

Col 2:14 If you read Col 2:13, it becomes apparent that this isn' talking about abolishing the ten-commandment law. Rather, Jesus nailed the guilt of our sin, or the decrees (ordinances) against us, to His cross.

2Cor 5:21 Jesus bore our sin, and was "made...to be sin for us." Thus when Jesus was crucified in our place, he nailed the decrees against us, our accusations and indictments, to his cross, so we can be free!

1Cor 7:19 The ordinances including circumcision are unnecessary, but God commandments are always necessary.

 

How can we do the "works" of the law and have faith in Christ at the same time?

Jame 2:8-25 We show our faith by our works (v. 18)

Jame 1:25 The law is a law of liberty. Only when we keep the law do we truely have liberty and freedom from sin.

How will God's end-time church relate to the law?

Rev 12:17, 14:12 In prophecy in Revelation, one of the characteristics of the remnant church is that they keep the commandments of God.

 

Can we hope to make it to heaven without keeping the commandments?

Rev 22:14 Those that have right to the tree of life are those that keep the commandments of God.
